As a Scottish person living in England I feel this on a personal level, when people say shit like “well it’s not the genuine asylum seekers I’m bothered by, it’s the people who just move here to get a better job and take advantage of our welfare system” and I’m like “Mate, I literally moved 500 miles south to a different country just to get a better job and better weather, if you’re going to hate on anyone for that hate on me.” 

Then they try to back-track and say things like “Well you already speak perfect English so it’s fine” and I’m like “My grandma didn’t speak very good English when my grandparents settled in the UK from Finland, what are you trying to say?” 

And they’re like “Well I’m sure you’re grandparents had useful jobs and weren’t just sponging off the system.” like… nah, my grandma mended clothes and my grandad sold garden sheds, they weren’t exactly brain surgeons 

“But they…” just admit it, it’s not white immigrants that bother you, I doubt Americans go on marches protesting the Canadian undergrad students who overstay their visas or all the germans and scandinavians who just rocked up in the Midwest one day and decided to call it their own.

This was how I finally started to understand white privilege.

I remember reading about a white European of some flavour who had overstayed their visa and wanted to go home but couldn’t afford the plane ticket. They tried to turn themselves in to ICE to get deported, and were straight up told “we’re not looking for people like you”

Not the same but it feels very similar: I grew up on welfare in the US. Food stamps, welfare payments, housing vouchers, for years until I was thirteen. I am also the whitest personal you’ve ever met. Any time I hear people in the States complaining about welfare fraud or laziness — and I have heard the term “welfare queen” come out of actual people’s actual mouths more than once, what the fuck — I tell them about my childhood and sit back and watch them scramble.

“I didn’t mean…” yeah, yup, you did.

“Well I’m sure your parents never —“ oh you’re sure, are you? How are you so sure? I’ll take one guess.

Honestly, I see a lot of people saying they are upset that Mirabel didn’t get a gift at the end, or that the family got their gifts back, but honestly, as a disabled person, I have a different perspective. I’m actually glad that Mirabel didn’t get a gift in the end.

While Mirabel isn’t explicitly stated to be disabled, she is certainly disabled-coded. A lot of her experiences align with those with disabilities, and her relationship with her family is similar to the relationship a lot of us have with our non-disabled family. In media, disabled and disabled-coded characters are usually treated one of two ways.

1. They miraculously “overcome” their disabilities, or become non-disabled, which is rarely the case for disabled people.
2. They are given a capitalistic use and in one form or another “earn” the same value as their non-disabled counterparts.

Neither of which Mirabel has to do! She is allowed to be special and valuable by accepting and being herself, and she doesn’t need to “overcome” the fact that she didn’t get a gift. She had to overcome her internalized ableism, but she isn’t “rewarded” by suddenly becoming nondisabled, she learns that she doesn’t need the same abilities as everyone else to have worth.

And in my opinion, that is amazing.

You know what, another layer of difficulty is when you’re thinking about villains, and the wise words of Megamind come into your head. You don’t just want your child to be just a regular villain. But how do you make your villain a Supervillain with no cape? Where is the drama? But Edna says no capes, you must deny them the flair. It is impossible to please them both, and it’s tearing this family apart.
